There’s no doubt about it the UK healthy drinks market is showing strong and sustained growth in response to changing consumer tastes and demands.

The National Diet & Nutrition Survey (2012) found that UK adults get 25% of their sugar intake from soft drinks and alarmingly this rises to 30% for 4-10 year olds and a staggering 40% for teenagers. Fuelled by concerns over sugar intake, and the detrimental effect it can have on health, consumers are increasingly seeking no added sugar alternatives and brands are innovating in response to this trend. The team behind Nuva water, Gemma Pond and Christine Renier, explore the new trends in the healthy soft drinks category on page 6.

Whilst tea is still the nation’s favourite cuppa, with 54% of Brits having at least one brew a day, sales of standard black tea have been in decline in recent years. This trend has been driven by changing tastes as well as consumers seeking low/no caffeine teas and those with health benefits such as green, fruit, herbal and other speciality teas, particularly amongst the millennial generation. On page 4 Razi Khan, Tea Taster at Heath & Heather, explores the flavour innovations which the brand is developing to inspire and excite the UK tea market such as superfood tea blends and functional herbal infusions.
