New Pet & Household Buying Guide

The shift towards responsible consumerism can now clearly be seen with the Household and Pet Care categories. As consumers have become increasingly aware of the health and environmental impact of the products they choose to eat, drink and use on their skin, they are now applying these same principles to what they feed their pets and use to clean their homes, with natural ingredients and sustainability being the current key trends driving market innovation and growth.

At an estimated value of £65m and a year on year growth rate of 10%, it’s predicted that within the next 5 years, the eco-cleaning category will double its share of the overall Household category. This reflects the change in consumer buying habits, as according to research by Nielsen, 26% of consumers now look for organic and all natural household products and 24% expect the packaging to be environmentally friendly.

There are clear signs of ‘pet parents’ trading upwards in pet food, they are looking for premium, natural, organic and sustainable pet products, as the humanisation of pets still remains the key trend shaping the market. After multiple years of decline, the general pet food market has started to return to growth, with a modest 1% YOY increase to now sit at a value of £2.9 billion, with data analyst GFK suggesting that natural pet food now accounts for a third of all sales. Pet supplementation is also is clearly on the rise, driven by two traits that closely reflect the human population: pet obesity and an ageing pet population.
