Whats Hot ... Oat Milk (& Oats)

Oat ‘milk’ has become the new dairy alternative of choice, helped greatly by its naturally sweet and mild flavour, which makes it versatile for use in cooking, with cereal or in smoothies. But what has really given it an edge over other plant-based milk alternatives, is its popularity with baristas as it works really well steamed and foamed. Increasingly becoming the vegan option of choice in coffee shops and with coffee aficionados.

Oats are of course more than just the latest on-trend free-from alternative drink, they remain an incredibly popular choice for a wholesome and filling breakfast, either as a warming bowl of porridge for the winter months or combined with fruit, nuts and seeds in muesli and granola. Oat bars, oatcakes and flapjacks are great on-the-go snack solutions with more innovative snack formats such as popped oat chips recently launched.

Oats also offer a whole host of health benefits. They are high in fibre and beta-glucan, a type of soluble fibre that forms a thick gel as it passes through the gut, which has been linked to lowering cholesterol levels, particularly LDL cholesterol, the type associated with an increased risk of heart disease. As a wholegrain, oats also provide a range of nutrients including B vitamins, iron and antioxidants.
